''...helping your child SIFT so you can help him SHIFT his way of looking...''

Even though I believe this sounds more like a groovy dance choreography, it is the phase from a brilliantly practical workbook by Siegel and Bryson (The Whole Brain Child Workbook).

The phase is actually encouraging parents to offer space to their child to consider a Sensation, to come up with an Idea, then share a Feeling and then end with a Thought.

By doing this in the car, during teeth brushing, a dog walk, sharing a packet of Rolos, during the TV adverts of your favourite series, it opens up the possibility of the child being about to shift a less positive mindset, and to consider how things are actually feeling ok in their mind and body.

Amongst other tips and techniques, the way this book is simply written, helped me to take things slow and crumb size, so that these different conversations didn't feel too textbook and robotic.

I do truly believe that Will.i.am would make a brilliant hit with "Sift it to shift it".
