Net Zero Policy
Introduction
The Government has set legally binding targets to meet net zero carbon by 2050 and Manchester set the objective for the city to be net zero carbon by 2038. As an organisation working directly with children and families, we have a duty to work towards the same sustainability goals, ensuring that the health and wellbeing of the planet is treated with care and respect, as well as the clients that we work with.
As a small organisation, we still have a responsibility to reach Net Zero targets. This policy will lay out what we currently do as an organisation, and what further steps we will take.
Summary of the environmental issues most relevant to Curiosity Project MCR CIC
Curiosity Project is a collective of remote workers. These include directors, 1 paid member of staff, and freelancers. As the work is remote, there are no business level energy bills or waste concerns. However, the majority of our work is delivered across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, which involves car travel across the region.
We produce workbooks for our clients, which are needed for the work we do to have the most lasting impact.
Our freelance team deliver therapeutic services, which sometimes require resources (such as art supplies). These are the responsibility of the contracted staff to procure.
Curiosity uses a number of suppliers to provide services such as insurance, phone contracts, website hosting and financial management. These all have their own policies and responsibilities relating to Net Zero targets.

Curiosity Project is a collective of wholehearted therapists who specialise in working with children, young people and their families.

Suppliers
Procure items only when necessary, and via suppliers committed to reaching Net Zero goals.
Continue to use local and green suppliers of paper products. Our booklets are printed by People for Print in Sheffield, who only use the most modern and eco-friendly materials – including recycled and FSC papers. Smaller printing is supplied locally, using sustainable paper supply. We are committed to reviewing this each year.
Encourage freelance staff to also review where they purchase resources. As they are self-employed, resources are their own to use across roles. However, we would strongly encourage anyone contracted to deliver work for Curiosity Project MCR CIC to use items procured from sustainable sources, and are committed to sharing best practice with the wider contract staff.
Review the suppliers of our web hosting, phone contracts, online storage, and accountancy software, to ensure we are using companies who are committed to Net Zero 2050.
Travel
Travel is an essential part of our work, as it allows the team to connect in person with the clients who we work with. We are committed to using sustainable options where possible (such as cycling or public transport), however the business and client need require the use of a car to access the spaces we work in.
Car travel, as with resources, is the responsibility of the freelancer. We would recommend that anyone using their cars to deliver work, would factor in offsetting the emissions.
Ensure ad hoc in person meetings will be completed over the phone or online – but only when this is relevant.
Add an additional charge to any work requested which is outside of our boundaries. This will be used towards business emissions offset costs.
Technology
Review the suppliers of our web hosting, phone contracts, online storage, and accountancy software, to ensure we are using companies who are committed to Net Zero 2050.
Use responsible and safe WEEE recycling, when needed.
Avoid using generative AI within the organisation, and encourage freelancers delivering work to do the same.
Regularly review the content and capacity of cloud storage usage.
Curiosity Project MCR CIC will review this list yearly, and comply with any legislation relating to the government’s Net Zero targets.
